About Hot Springs, Arkansas
Hot Springs is now ranked Number 4
as one of the
"Top 100" Small Art Towns in America"
in a book by John Villani. Some of the reasons for this is The Hot Springs
Music Festival, the expansion of the downtown art galleries and other
activities. The art center is now 59 years old which adds to the
festivities. Also adding to the "art town" reputation is the Hot
Springs Documentary Film Institute which is planning its sixth annual event which is
featured in late October. There is also the continual downtown Hot Springs Gallery
Walks and exhitits at the Hot Springs Civic & Convention Center, the Jazz Festival,
and the Blues Festival during the summer. There are quarterly productions of the
Pocket Theater, regular events at The Poet's Loft, the Art in the Park event, the Art
Blast, and Garven woodland Gardens is a real asset to the community.

Antiques
The term antique was originally defined by U.S. Customs to be anything
made before 1830. This was later changed to anything over 100 years old. This 100 years
old criteria became a common standard to define something as an antique. Yet, most antique
shops and antique shows today typically have a large percentage of inventory made in the
20th century.
Today even high-end antique dealers carry these items. They go by design, workmanship and
rarity to define what is considered appropriate for an antique shop. Examples of items in
this category are art pottery, art glass, jewelry from the turn of the century through the
1940's, and Tiffany silver produced in this century. Very old glass is heavy and has
flaws. Cake plates on pedestals that were made in the 1800's are usually made in two
pieces and are sealed together. Pitchers from that ara heavy as well.
Yellowware pottery is very desireable and has a yellow clay with a heavy feel.
Vintage
Vintage denotes items that were made in the early 20th Century such as quilts,
kitchen utensils, canister sets, tablecloths, dishes, toys, lamps, World War items, books,
and even clothing. Each decade has its own style and color trend. At the time
of the depression in the 30's you find the colored glass begins its legacy in large
quantities and this could be purchased for 15 cents each. Movie theaters gave it
away just for being a patron. Cobalt blue glass has always been an antique and a
vintage favorite. During the 40's the kitchen tools and linens seemed to be
dominated with grreen, yellows and reds. In the 50's you can spot turquoise and pink
along with black as a definite color trend. The 60's set a style of modern extreme
accessories much more defined from the 50's. Aluminum Christmas trees are found for
the first time at the end of the 50's and early 60's. In the 70's you find gold and
olive green as the dominant color schemes. And somewhere in the 60's and 70's the
color orange is very prevelant. The promotional collectibles started in the 70's
with fast food lures but Roy Rogers was the king of promotional items in the 40's and
50's. He made more money selling Roy Rogers memorabilia than anyone. These items
mentioned are a few of the vintage history trends, there are thousands.
Collectibles
Collectibles is a term that is sometimes used to distinguish more recent
items from antiques. The term collectibles also has somewhat of a connotation of
"popular" culture. Things that were part of everyday life in a bygone era are
now fondly remembered. There are thousands of categories, but some examples would include
fountain pens, children's lunch boxes, movie memorabilia and comic books. It can also
refer to "limited edition" collectibles. Those are things manufactured and
marketed specifically as collectibles as in collector's plates and Franklin mint items.
Really though, collectibles are anything that people collect. This could mean coins,
antiques, rocks, Star Wars memorabilia made in the 70's, or today's belly rings. Its
anything.
